Winery Overview & History
Harlan Estate, founded by Bill Harlan in 1984 in Oakville (Napa Valley), is one of California’s foremost “first growth” properties. Conceived as a long-term Grand Cru project, the estate produces limited, collectible wines defined by depth, longevity, and site expression.
Vineyard Location & Terroir
Hillside vineyards rise above Oakville’s western bench, combining volcanic tuff, sedimentary sandstones, and fractured rock. Sunny exposures, cool evening air, and low-yield farming deliver intensity with freshness and fine tannin detail.
Grape Varieties & Wine Style
The core is a Bordeaux blend led by Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. Aromas of blackcurrant, graphite, violets, and cedar unfold into a layered, powerful palate with remarkable aging potential.
Signature Wines
- Harlan Estate — Flagship Grand Vin of profound depth and longevity.
- The Maiden — Second wine offering the estate’s signature in a more approachable frame.
Winemaking & Cellar Practices
Hand harvesting by parcel, meticulous sorting, small-lot fermentations, and extended élevage in French oak. Long-term blending trials aim for harmony, texture, and refined power.
