Winery Overview & History
Vega Sicilia, founded in 1864 in Ribera del Duero, is Spain’s most iconic estate and a global symbol of patience, precision, and prestige. Under the Álvarez family’s stewardship, it continues to define Spanish fine wine through timeless craftsmanship.
Vineyard Location & Terroir
Its vineyards stretch along the Duero River, 700–900 meters above sea level. Limestone, marl, and gravelly soils, combined with extreme continental temperatures, create wines of depth, structure, and longevity.
Grape Varieties & Wine Style
Tempranillo (Tinto Fino) forms the core, complemented by Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Vega Sicilia’s wines marry ripe fruit with restraint—elegant, layered, and built to age for decades.
Signature Wines
- Único – The legendary Grand Vin, released after long cellaring.
- Valbuena 5° – A second wine of freshness and vibrance.
- Alión – A modern expression of Ribera power and grace.
Winemaking & Cellar Practices
Meticulous sorting, traditional fermentation, and extended oak aging define the estate’s philosophy. Wines rest for up to 10 years before release, achieving unrivaled harmony and depth.
