La Rioja Alta

Winery Overview & History

La Rioja Alta, founded in 1890 in Haro, is one of Rioja’s historic cornerstones. Its philosophy blends classic aging traditions with continuous innovation, producing wines of elegance, depth, and unmistakable Rioja identity.

Vineyard Location & Terroir

Vineyards in Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa rest on limestone-clay soils at 500–700 meters elevation. The Atlantic climate, moderated by Sierra Cantabria, fosters slow ripening and aromatic complexity.

Grape Varieties & Wine Style

Dominated by Tempranillo with Garnacha, Mazuelo, and Graciano. Long barrel aging in American oak produces reds of spice, red fruit, and balsamic finesse—structured yet graceful, built to age decades.

Signature Wines

  • Gran Reserva 904 — Silky, complex, and timeless Rioja classic.
  • Gran Reserva 890 — Iconic collector’s wine with extraordinary longevity.
  • Viña Ardanza — Beloved Reserva with vibrant fruit and gentle oak.

Winemaking & Cellar Practices

Hand harvesting, manual racking, and traditional long aging in American oak crafted in the estate’s own cooperage. Blending expertise defines house harmony.
