Winery Overview & History
Klein Constantia, nestled on the cool slopes of the Constantiaberg in Cape Town, traces its roots to the late 17th century. Celebrated in European courts by the 18th and 19th centuries, the estate’s legendary sweet wine—Vin de Constance—was favored by figures from Napoleon to Jane Austen’s characters, cementing its mythic status.
Vineyard Location & Terroir
Vines lie between sea-facing slopes and native fynbos, shaped by the Atlantic’s cool breezes. Decomposed granite and Table Mountain sandstone soils, combined with long growing seasons and marked diurnal shifts, yield grapes of vivid perfume, freshness and natural acidity—ideal for both sweet and dry styles.
Grape Varieties & Wine Style
The signature variety is Muscat de Frontignan for Vin de Constance, delivering aromas of apricot, orange blossom and spice balanced by crystalline acidity. Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay lead the dry whites; Cabernet family varieties craft elegant, cool-climate reds with leafy freshness and fine tannins.
Signature Wines
- Vin de Constance — South Africa’s iconic natural sweet wine, unfortified, celebrated for purity, fragrance and extraordinary longevity.
- Klein Constantia Estate Sauvignon Blanc / Chardonnay — Precision-driven, mineral, maritime-influenced dry whites.
Winemaking & Cellar Practices
Selective hand-harvesting over multiple passes ensures perfect ripeness. Gentle pressing, cool fermentations and carefully judged oak (where used) preserve clarity and tension. For Vin de Constance, extended skin contact, slow fermentations and long élevage cultivate depth, texture and age-worthy complexity.
