Kanonkop Estate

Winery Overview & History

Kanonkop Estate sits on the lower slopes of Simonsberg in Stellenbosch and is revered for elevating South Africa’s signature grape, Pinotage. Family-owned since 1973, the estate crafts powerful, age-worthy reds with classic structure.

Vineyard Location & Terroir

South-facing vineyards rooted in decomposed granite and Hutton soils benefit from long, dry summers and cooling maritime influences. The result is optimal ripeness with freshness and firm, fine tannin profiles.

Grape Varieties & Wine Style

Focus on Pinotage and Bordeaux varieties (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc). Pinotage shows dark cherry, plum, cocoa, and subtle smoke; the estate’s Cabernet-led blends deliver classical cassis, cedar, and longevity.

Signature Wines

  • Kanonkop Pinotage — Benchmark expression of South Africa’s native variety.
  • Paul Sauer — Iconic Cabernet-based blend with remarkable aging capacity.
  • Kadette Range — Approachable, estate-crafted reds for earlier enjoyment.

Winemaking & Cellar Practices

Hand selection, traditional open-top fermenters for reds, basket pressing, and maturation in French oak. Emphasis on purity of fruit, structure, and cellar longevity.
