Hamilton Russell Vineyards

Winery Overview & History

Hamilton Russell Vineyards is one of South Africa’s most southerly wine estates and a pioneer of cool-climate viticulture in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley near Hermanus. Founded in 1975 by Tim Hamilton Russell and now led by Anthony Hamilton Russell, the winery focuses exclusively on fine Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Its wines are internationally celebrated for Burgundian elegance, minerality and restraint—proof that South Africa can rival the world’s greatest terroirs.

Vineyard Location & Terroir

The estate lies just a few kilometers from the Atlantic Ocean, benefiting from strong maritime influence and cooling sea breezes. Clay-rich shale and ironstone soils give the wines structure and depth, while the valley’s moderate climate allows slow ripening and naturally balanced acidity. This unique terroir defines the signature purity and longevity of Hamilton Russell wines.

Grape Varieties & Wine Style

Hamilton Russell produces only two estate wines—Pinot Noir and Chardonnay—crafted with minimal intervention to reflect place rather than process. The style is refined and textured: the Chardonnay is layered with citrus, hazelnut and mineral notes, while the Pinot Noir shows wild cherry, earth and gentle spice wrapped in silky tannins.

Signature Wines

  • Hamilton Russell Vineyards Chardonnay — One of South Africa’s most acclaimed whites, combining freshness, oak finesse and savory depth.
  • Hamilton Russell Vineyards Pinot Noir — Elegant and complex, often compared to top Burgundies for its structure and perfume.

Winemaking & Cellar Practices

All grapes are hand-harvested, whole-bunch pressed and fermented with indigenous yeasts. The Chardonnay is barrel-fermented and aged for about 9 months in French oak (approximately 30% new), while the Pinot Noir undergoes traditional open-top fermentation followed by 10 months of aging in French oak barrels. The approach emphasizes texture, balance and a natural sense of place.
