Winery Overview & History
Quinta do Noval stands among Portugal’s most historic and revered wine estates, famed for its pioneering role in Port and Douro wines. Founded in the early 18th century, the estate has become synonymous with elegance, innovation, and terroir-driven identity. Noval was one of the first producers to bottle wine at the estate under its own name—a vision that helped shape modern Portuguese wine culture.
Vineyard Location & Terroir
Located in the heart of the Douro Valley, near Pinhão, Quinta do Noval’s vineyards climb steep schist terraces overlooking the river. These poor, rocky soils and intense sun exposure create concentrated, age-worthy grapes that express both richness and structure.
With over 145 hectares under vine, the estate is divided into distinct parcels that each reflect micro-variations of altitude, exposure, and soil composition.
Grape Varieties & Wine Style
Noval focuses on traditional Douro varieties such as Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, and Tinta Cão. The wines show remarkable balance—ripe dark fruit, violets, spice, and graphite—supported by fine tannins and vibrant freshness.
Both its Ports and still wines share a common thread: purity, depth, and the unmistakable character of Douro schist.
Signature Wines
- Quinta do Noval Nacional Vintage Port — Produced only in exceptional years from ungrafted vines; legendary for its depth and longevity.
- Quinta do Noval Vintage Port — Complex and powerful, combining elegance with structure.
- Cedro do Noval — A refined Douro red showcasing harmony between fruit and minerality.
Winemaking & Cellar Practices
Hand-harvested grapes are foot-trodden in traditional granite lagares before fermentation. Wines are aged in seasoned oak and stainless steel depending on style. Noval combines artisanal techniques with modern precision to maintain consistency and authenticity.
