Soldera

Winery Overview & History

Soldera (Case Basse) represents the uncompromising pursuit of authenticity in Montalcino. Founded in 1972 by Gianfranco Soldera and his wife Graziella, the estate is located on the southern slopes of Montalcino in Tuscany. Gianfranco—an outspoken perfectionist—believed great wine is made in the vineyard, not in the cellar. His philosophy of minimal intervention and absolute respect for nature created some of Italy’s most profound, long-lived Sangiovese wines.

Vineyard Location & Terroir

The Case Basse estate spans just 8 hectares of vineyards surrounded by botanical gardens and oak forests that preserve biodiversity. The soils are a mix of galestro, limestone, and clay, with excellent drainage and strong diurnal variation. The elevation of 320–350 meters ensures freshness and slow ripening, giving wines of extraordinary balance and aromatic purity.

Grape Varieties & Wine Style

Soldera produces only one grape—100% Sangiovese Grosso—and one wine each vintage. The style is unmistakable: transparent yet deep, with notes of red cherry, rose, earth, and spice. Unlike the richer modern Brunellos, Soldera wines are ethereal and age for decades, built on energy, tension, and grace rather than power.

Signature Wines

  • Soldera Case Basse IGT Toscana — Formerly Brunello di Montalcino; now bottled under IGT to preserve full creative freedom. Aged five to six years in large Slavonian oak and released without filtration.

Winemaking & Cellar Practices

Fermentation is spontaneous with native yeasts in large oak vats, without temperature control or additives. No fining, no filtration, no manipulation. The wines age for up to six years in Slavonian oak casks and rest several more in bottle before release. Every step follows the natural rhythm of the vineyard—Soldera’s hallmark of purity and integrity.
