Biondi Santi

Winery Overview & History

Biondi Santi is the cradle of Brunello di Montalcino, the wine that defined Tuscany’s modern fine-wine reputation. Founded in the mid-19th century by Clemente Santi and later refined by his grandson Ferruccio Biondi Santi, the estate was the first to vinify and age 100% Sangiovese Grosso—known locally as Brunello. The family’s legacy at the historic Tenuta Greppo estate remains a cornerstone of Italian winemaking excellence.

Vineyard Location & Terroir

The vineyards lie on the southeast slopes of Montalcino at 400–500 meters above sea level. The soils are rich in marl and limestone, offering perfect drainage and a balance of minerality and structure. The cool mountain air and warm Mediterranean sun create an ideal environment for slow, even ripening, giving Brunello its signature elegance and longevity.

Grape Varieties & Wine Style

Biondi Santi exclusively cultivates the estate’s proprietary clone of Sangiovese Grosso. The wines are noted for their pale ruby hue, high acidity and refined tannins—less about opulence and more about purity, perfume and age-worthiness. With time, aromas of wild cherry, rose, leather and tobacco unfold into haunting complexity.

Signature Wines

  • Biondi Santi Brunello di Montalcino DOCG Riserva — Produced only in exceptional vintages, aged up to 36 months in Slavonian oak and revered for its extraordinary longevity.
  • Biondi Santi Brunello di Montalcino DOCG — The estate’s hallmark expression, elegant, structured and true to its historic style.
  • Rosso di Montalcino — A youthful and vibrant expression of the same vineyards, crafted for early enjoyment.

Winemaking & Cellar Practices

The estate remains faithful to traditional methods—long fermentations with native yeasts, gentle extraction, and aging in large Slavonian oak casks. No barriques, no shortcuts, and no compromise. This minimalist philosophy allows terroir and vintage to speak, producing wines that can mature gracefully for half a century or more.
