Royal Tokaji

Winery Overview & History

Royal Tokaji was founded in 1990, revitalizing Hungary’s ancient Tokaj region after decades of neglect. Guided by Hugh Johnson and local winemaking pioneers, it restored the world’s oldest classified wine region to international glory.

Vineyard Location & Terroir

The vineyards lie in Mád and surrounding hills, on volcanic soils of rhyolite and tuff. Cool nights and autumn mists from the Bodrog River encourage noble rot, creating the precious aszú berries used for Tokaji Aszú.

Grape Varieties & Wine Style

Predominantly Furmint, with Hárslevelű and Muscat Blanc. Wines are sweet yet vibrant, combining honeyed richness with laser-like acidity and mineral depth.

Signature Wines

  • Tokaji Aszú 5 or 6 Puttonyos – Amber nectar with apricot, orange peel, and spice.
  • Essencia – The rarest, purest essence of noble rot grapes; eternal sweetness.

Winemaking & Cellar Practices

Aszú berries are macerated in must or base wine, then fermented and aged in small oak barrels for years in ancient underground cellars. Each bottle glows with the warmth of Tokaj’s golden hills.
