Château Mukhrani

Winery Overview & History

Château Mukhrani is Georgia’s first château-style winery, founded in 1878 by Prince Ivane Mukhranbatoni, a descendant of the royal Bagrationi dynasty. Inspired by Bordeaux, he introduced French techniques to Georgia and established a pioneering estate that united viticulture, winemaking, and architecture.

After decades of dormancy during the Soviet era, the estate was restored in the early 2000s and has since become a symbol of Georgia’s winemaking renaissance — blending aristocratic heritage with modern elegance.

Vineyard Location & Terroir

The vineyards are located in the Kartli region, north of Tbilisi, where the confluence of the Mtkvari and Aragvi rivers provides fertile alluvial soils and excellent drainage. A moderate continental climate with warm days and cool nights promotes balance and freshness in the grapes.

This terroir lends Château Mukhrani wines their characteristic harmony of structure, fruit, and minerality.

Grape Varieties & Wine Style

The estate cultivates both native Georgian varieties — Saperavi, Rkatsiteli, and Goruli Mtsvane — and international grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. The style combines Old World finesse with the bold character of Georgian fruit.

Signature Wines

  • Saperavi Reserve — Deep and velvety red with blackberry, spice, and smoky undertones.
  • Rkatsiteli — Crisp and mineral-driven white with pear and floral aromas.
  • Mukhrani Sparkling — Elegant and refreshing, made in the traditional method.

Winemaking & Cellar Practices

Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks and French oak barrels, depending on style. The estate blends modern precision with qvevri-inspired techniques, respecting Georgian authenticity while achieving international polish.
