Winery Overview & History
Château Léoville Las Cases is one of Bordeaux’s most revered estates, often considered a “Super Second.” Once part of the great Léoville domain, it became independent in 1840 under the Delon family, whose stewardship continues today. The estate’s emblematic lion and grand arch mark the entrance to a château defined by precision, structure, and intellect.
Vineyard Location & Terroir
Located in the northern Saint-Julien appellation, adjacent to Pauillac and the vineyards of Latour, its 98 hectares sit on deep gravel and clay subsoils that lend both finesse and power. The vines, averaging 30–40 years old, are meticulously maintained for balance and concentration.
Grape Varieties & Wine Style
Plantings are dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon (70%), complemented by Merlot (15%) and Cabernet Franc (15%). The wines are scholarly — pure, structured, and age-worthy, offering cassis, graphite, and tobacco with profound depth.
Signature Wines
- Château Léoville Las Cases (Grand Vin) — One of Bordeaux’s most powerful and precise wines, built to age gracefully for decades.
- Le Petit Lion du Marquis de Las Cases — The second wine, accessible in youth but faithful to the estate’s classical Saint-Julien style.
Winemaking & Cellar Practices
Grapes are hand-harvested, sorted, and fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel and wooden vats. The Grand Vin is aged in French oak (about 80% new) for up to 20 months. Each parcel is vinified separately, reflecting the estate’s meticulous pursuit of purity.
