Winery Overview & History
Nestled in the heart of Saint-Émilion, Château Angélus stands as one of Bordeaux’s most iconic estates, celebrated for its harmony of tradition and innovation. Founded in the 18th century by the de Boüard de Laforest family, Angélus has remained under their stewardship for eight generations, preserving both legacy and excellence.
The estate’s name derives from the sound of church bells that once rang simultaneously from three surrounding chapels, echoing across the vineyards — a symbol of unity and devotion that continues to define Angélus today.
Vineyard Location & Terroir
Château Angélus is located on the southern slopes of Saint-Émilion, where clay-limestone and sandy soils meet. The 39-hectare vineyard benefits from excellent sun exposure and natural drainage, allowing for optimal ripening and flavor development.
The estate’s unique terroir, blending limestone plateaus and deep clays, produces wines of both power and grace — a signature of the region’s finest Grand Cru Classé “A” estates.
Grape Varieties & Wine Style
The vineyard composition features 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc, a blend that defines Angélus’ aromatic depth and silken structure. The wines display remarkable balance between fruit intensity, floral perfume, and a velvety texture that evolves beautifully with age.
Expect rich layers of blackberry, plum, mocha, and truffle, supported by fine-grained tannins and a long, resonant finish — a hallmark of the estate’s meticulous craftsmanship.
Signature Wines
- Château Angélus (Grand Vin) — A profound expression of Saint-Émilion’s terroir, combining intensity, complexity, and longevity.
- Carillon d’Angélus (Second Wine) — Elegant and approachable, highlighting the estate’s precision and finesse.
- No. 3 d’Angélus — A modern and vibrant expression designed for earlier enjoyment.
Notable vintages include 1998, 2005, 2009, 2010, 2015, and 2018.
Winemaking & Cellar Practices
Grapes are hand-harvested and sorted with extreme precision. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel and wooden vats, followed by aging in 100% new French oak barrels for 18–22 months. Each lot is vinified separately to preserve the identity of each parcel.
Château Angélus is renowned for its continuous innovation — including the use of gravity-flow winemaking and sustainable viticulture to preserve environmental balance.
