Silver Heights Winery

Winery Overview & History

Silver Heights Winery stands as a symbol of modern Chinese fine wine. Founded in 2007 by Emma Gao and her father Gao Lin in Ningxia’s Helan Mountain region, the estate quickly became one of China’s most respected boutique wineries. Emma Gao, trained in Bordeaux and experienced at Château Calon-Ségur, blends French technique with Ningxia’s unique terroir to craft wines of purity, structure and elegance.

Vineyard Location & Terroir

The vineyards lie on the eastern foothills of the Helan Mountains, at altitudes of 1,200–1,300 meters above sea level. This high elevation brings abundant sunlight, large day-night temperature differences and dry continental air—ideal for slow ripening and disease control. The gravelly, sandy loam soils provide natural drainage, producing small berries with deep color and concentration.

Grape Varieties & Wine Style

Silver Heights focuses primarily on Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot for reds, along with small plantings of Chardonnay and Viognier for whites. The style is refined yet powerful—aromas of blackcurrant, cedar and herbs framed by firm tannins and vibrant freshness. Whites display mineral tension, citrus, and subtle oak integration.

Signature Wines

  • The Summit — The flagship Bordeaux-style blend, showing structure, depth and long aging potential.
  • Jia Yuan (Family Reserve) — A limited production cuvée named after Emma Gao’s family, emphasizing purity and finesse.
  • Emma’s Reserve Chardonnay — Elegant and textured, reflecting Ningxia’s cool-climate precision.

Winemaking & Cellar Practices

Grapes are hand-harvested and sorted with precision. Fermentation takes place in small stainless-steel vats and French oak barrels, followed by 12–18 months of maturation in fine-grained French oak. The philosophy combines minimal intervention with careful blending, aiming for balance, natural expression and long-term cellar life.
