Winery Overview & History
Bodega Catena Zapata is Argentina’s most celebrated winery and a pioneer of high-altitude viticulture. Founded in 1902 by Italian immigrant Nicola Catena, it was transformed by Dr. Nicolás Catena Zapata, who elevated Argentine Malbec to world-class status. The estate’s iconic Mayan-style pyramid winery symbolizes the union of heritage and innovation.
Vineyard Location & Terroir
Located in Mendoza’s Uco Valley and Luján de Cuyo, Catena’s vineyards rise between 900 and 1,500 meters above sea level. The extreme altitude, intense sunlight, and cool nights create grapes of remarkable concentration, acidity, and aromatic precision. The Adrianna Vineyard, often called “the Grand Cru of South America,” is the crown jewel of the estate.
Grape Varieties & Wine Style
Malbec is the heart of Catena Zapata, joined by Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and other varieties. The wines show rich black fruit, violet, and graphite notes balanced by minerality and freshness. They are structured yet elegant, capable of long aging.
Signature Wines
- Nicolás Catena Zapata – The flagship Bordeaux-style blend, powerful and refined.
- Adrianna Vineyard Malbec – Pure expression of high-altitude terroir.
- White Bones Chardonnay – Textural and mineral, from calcareous soils.
Winemaking & Cellar Practices
Precision viticulture and small-batch fermentation define Catena’s approach. The winery combines modern science with traditional oak aging. Dr. Laura Catena continues her family’s legacy, bridging Argentine passion with global excellence.
